As billions of dollars in farmland transition to new hands over the next two decades, Peoples Company is launching a national awareness campaign to help landowners prepare for one of the most significant generational shifts in U.S. agriculture.

At the center of the effort is Map of My Kingdom, a one-woman play written by former Iowa Poet Laureate Mary Swander. The performance explores real stories of families navigating the emotional and financial complexities of farmland inheritance, from long-standing disputes to transitions made smoother through early planning.

To support these conversations, Peoples Company has released a free video of the play, featuring an introduction by President Steve Bruere, and re-released a white paper titled Your Farmland and the Future, which outlines key steps for landowners beginning the succession process.

"Over 370 million acres, 40 percent of U.S. farmland, will change hands by 2045, according to the American Farmland Trust’s Farms Under Threat 2040 report,” said Bruere. “The question isn’t whether this will happen, but whether landowners are prepared. Without a plan, these transitions risk fragmenting ownership, inviting outside interests, or weakening long-term stewardship."

A series of Map of My Kingdom performances will take place across the country.
