The National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF) has collected institutional commercial property investment performance on a quarterly basis for over 40 years. The Farmland Index measures investment performance of a large pool of individual farmland properties acquired in the private market for investment purposes only.

NCREIF recently released the 4th quarter results of the Farmland Index. The top-performing region this quarter for All Farmland was Lake States at 4.58% and the lowest-performing region this quarter for All Farmland was Pacific Northwest at –2.51%. The annual total return top performing region was Southern Plains at 7.42%, followed closely by Lake States at 6.13%. Of note, the Pacific West total annual return for annual cropland was 7.68%.  Overall all farmland (total) returned 3.08% for the year; permanent cropland returned 1.27% for the year and annual cropland returned 4.20% for the year.
